Amending Liberty
The House has just passed an amendment to the Constitution (HJ Res 10) that states simply:
“The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States”
With this simple statement comes a great decline in Liberty. Do not misunderstand me, I find it deplorable that someone would desecrate the symbol of our great Nation… but that is the ironic beauty of our flag; it represents a Nation that gives scumbags the right to defile its imagery. To destroy, or mistreat, a flag does not destroy freedom, it does not destroy the greatness of our Nation, and it does not do anything more than offend us, and show the ignorance of the one who performs the awful action. However, to limit someone’s freedom because we find their actions offensive DOES destroy freedom, DOES destroy the greatness of our Nation, and is offensive to everyone who fights, or who has fought, to preserve the freedoms the flag represents; and goes a long way to show the ignorance of those who cannot understand the double-edge of a free society.
In the end, all I can say is this…
To strip away the liberty of a Nation’s people is to cause the flag that represents that Nation to lose its luster, as the light of liberty that shines upon it is dimmed. To pass this amendment is to cause the ultimate desecration of the flag and the Nation it represents.
